10-01-2006 Toy for Tots
Larry Faut - October 1st 2006
There is one word I can use for the description of the day, WOW!!!!!! What a day. It started out on the chilly side. We had a good turn out at the I HOP for breakfast. Nancy's radio interview helped increase our numbers and possibly gain us some new members. The ride was not too creative. We took off with what started out as 18 bikes, south onto I-25. We picked up a couple of bikes on the way down to Pikes Peak Harley make our number closer to 20.
Upon our arrival we were ushered into a parking spot away from the masses. We were to find out later on that this parking location was reserved for the special groups who had ridden in. When the parade took off we found ourselves at the beginning of the parade. This was an event for me. I have never been this close to the beginning of a parade like this. I would estimate about four to five thousand bikes were involved.
The parade was well organized. The Colorado Springs Police did a remarkable job of escorting this mass quantity of bikes. All the intersections where well blocked. There were no issues with the four wheeled public putting a damper on the event. The final parking lot for the parade had plenty of space and was well prepared for the event. Pro Promotions was doing this event and I must say my hat's off to them. Every penny and toy is going to a kid in need. There are no deductions going to overhead or expenses. What a breath of fresh air that was to hear.
The treck home was made by 15 bikes. Our group decided not to stay for the dinner at the COWBOY in Colorado Springs. Instead we decided to head north and stop at the Depot in Palmer Lake. They were more than happy to accommodate our party. The wait staff had fun with us. They made sure we were well taken care of. Stopping at the Depot was a good decision. The return trip was made on one of my favorite stretches of road, 105.
We couldn't have asked for a better day than what we had. What a day.
