08-18-2006 Cripple Creek Veterans Rally

Larry Faut - August 18th 2006

The weather this year was a major contributor in the attendance. With Hwy 67 being closed, the remaining routes left open this year were through Colorado Springs or the mountain route through South Park. The route coming down from Denver via I-25 to Hwy 24 got dumped on. The number of people I talked with that came this way said they passed as many bikes that had turned around and were heading home as were dealing with the rain and coming to Cripple Creek. The Del Herron ride that Clissy & Tim lead took a route through South Park this year. Surprisingly enough, this was the route that missed all the rain. After last years record setting attendance it was easy to see how the weather affected this year’s numbers.

This has always been a great rally for making a weekend of it. We had members stay from Friday through Sunday and others ride down for the daily events. Saturday was the main day for the biker parade and veterans events. The sun had made its' presence known throughout the day holding the rain at bay till late afternoon.

The sight of the huge American flag that was draped across the street is the trademark of this event. It still brings a lump to my throat regardless of how many times I see it. The feeling of patriotism that exists with this rally is truly heart warming.

Those that coped with the various conditions to get here had a great time. We took a ton of pictures this year. We'll get these posted as soon as possible.
