5-8-2010 Carter Lake Ride
Lynn Van Eperen - May 8th 2010
Today started off on the chilly side, but sunny. 7 riders met at the King Soopers in Broomfield (Mark C, Lynn V, Nancy, Rod Y, Bob L, Charles E and a guest-Glenn). We had our pre-ride briefing and kickstands went up just after 10am. Due to construction on 95th, we went straight up 287 to Longmont instead of our normal route. It was still chilly, but a nice ride.
When we turned onto Ken Pratt from 287, we noticed that Main Street/287 was closed through town (later we found out that there had been a shooting in town), but we bypassed the excitement and headed over to Rocky Mountain Kawasaki-a sponsor. Marshall greeted us with coffee and donuts. Thus fortified, we headed on out through Longmont towards Carter Lake. We got split up a few times by lights, but were able to be back together by the time we crossed Hwy. 66 on the way out of town.
We did miss our normal turn-off to Carter Lake, but took a scenic route and ended up right where we needed to be anyway. Mark says he constantly expected that we would turn onto a dirt road or a dead-end, but we made it up to Carter Lake and noone would have known we missed our turn if Mark hadn’t mentioned it.
We stopped at the Marina Store (a new addition is the Marina Store with a nice paved parking lot) and watched the sailboats out on the lake for a few minutes before heading one.
We headed down the south side of the lake and back into Lyons for lunch at Oskar Blues. Somehow our sunny day had turned rather overcast between the Carter Lake stop and lunch-although the skies didn’t look nearly as threatening once we took off our sunglasses.
We then headed back into Boulder for an ice-cream stop at Glacier. From there, we broke up and headed for our respective homes (hoping to beat the rain).
It was a very nice ride, if a tad chilly at times. Great scenery, great food, great friends!
